The roof edge: soffit, fascia, rake and exterior trim

The edge of the roof is where the house breathes, and where it rots

Fascia holds the gutters, soffit lets the attic breathe, and trim seals every place the siding stops. When they fail, water gets into the rafter tails, animals get into the attic and the paint never stays on. We repair and replace soffit, fascia and trim in vented aluminum, PVC and wrapped wood, with the gutters, the roof edge and the siding they meet, on New Jersey homes since 1990.

Signs

What the symptom usually means, and what we do about it

Six things we see most at New Jersey roof edges, and the honest answer for each.

01

Peeling paint and soft wood on the fascia

Usually: a gutter that overflowed for years, or no drip edge, so water ran behind the gutter into the board.

We do: replace the rotted fascia, add drip edge, wrap or replace in PVC, re-hang the gutter.

02

Sagging or stained soffit panels

Usually: an ice dam or a roof leak at the eave that soaked the soffit from above.

We do: fix the roof edge first, replace the panels, and vent the soffit so it dries.

03

Squirrels, birds or wasps in the attic

Usually: an open soffit joint or a rotted corner they chewed through.

We do: close the gaps with new vented panels and trim, screen the vents, repair the damage inside.

04

Ice dams and icicles every winter

Usually: no intake ventilation at the eaves, so the attic is warm and the roof melts snow that refreezes at the edge.

We do: vented soffit with baffles above the insulation, ridge venting, and the eave sealed at the next roof.

05

Hot upstairs rooms, short-lived shingles

Usually: the same thing: an attic that cannot breathe cooks the shingles from below.

We do: intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge, balanced to the attic's size.

06

Trim that needs painting every few years

Usually: bare wood rakes, corners and surrounds that take the weather first.

We do: wrap in coil aluminum or replace in PVC, colour-matched, so the painting stops.

Materials

Which material for which part of the edge

We install Azek PVC and Mastic aluminum and vinyl components, chosen because they do not warp, rot or feed insects and never need paint. These are the parts and what each one gets.

Vented aluminum soffit the standard

Best for: nearly every house: intake ventilation and a finish that lasts.

Why: perforated panels move air into the attic, baked-on colour, never rots, matches aluminum fascia and gutters.

Expected life 30+ yr

Vinyl soffit budget and colour match

Best for: homes with vinyl siding that want the soffit to match exactly.

Why: vented or solid panels in the siding's colour line; lighter and cheaper than aluminum.

Expected life 25–30 yr

Aluminum-wrapped fascia coil stock over wood

Best for: sound wood fascia that just needs to stop being painted.

Why: custom-bent coil aluminum over the board, with a drip edge above and the gutter hung through it.

Expected life 30+ yr

PVC fascia and trim Azek and similar

Best for: replacing rotted fascia, rakes, corner boards and surrounds for good.

Why: cellular PVC cuts and installs like wood, holds paint if you want colour, and cannot rot. The right answer for the pieces that failed.

Lifetime material warranty

Wood, repaired and sealed historic homes

Best for: houses where the profile and the look have to stay original.

Why: rot cut out, epoxy consolidation, matched mouldings, primed on all six sides. Needs paint every 7 to 10 years and we say so.

Expected life 20+ yr, maintained

Ventilation intake and exhaust

Best for: every attic. The soffit is only half the system.

Why: vented soffit for intake, baffles so insulation does not block it, ridge vent for exhaust, sized to the attic. Fixes ice dams and extends the roof.

Replacement

What a soffit and fascia replacement includes with us

The roof edge is one assembly: rafter tails, fascia, drip edge, gutter, soffit and the trim that closes it. We replace it as one assembly, which is why it stays dry.

  1. 01
Gutters down, rot outGutters removed and saved or replaced; rotted fascia and rafter tails cut back to sound wood and sistered or replaced; the old soffit removed.
  2. 02
Ventilation set upBaffles installed between the rafters so attic insulation cannot block the intake; ridge or roof vents checked so the air has somewhere to go.
  3. 03
Fascia and soffit onNew or wrapped fascia with drip edge above it; vented soffit panels in J-channel and F-channel, corners and returns finished; rakes and trim wrapped or replaced to match.
  4. 04
Gutters back, sealed, testedGutters re-hung on hidden hangers into the new fascia, downspouts reconnected, every joint sealed, the edge water-tested before we leave.
Why Roof4Roof

A roofer's roof edge: the drip edge goes in, the attic breathes

Siding and gutter crews wrap fascia over rot and nail solid soffit over a sealed attic. We do the roof edge the way a roofer needs it to work. Four things we do on every soffit and fascia job that most crews do not:

  • Rot replaced, never wrapped overAluminum over a rotted board hides the rot for exactly as long as the gutter holds. We cut it out and replace it first.
  • Drip edge and gutter apronMetal under the shingle edge and over the fascia, so water goes into the gutter, not behind it. Most fascia rot is a missing drip edge.
  • Ventilation that is actually openVented soffit is useless over insulation that blocks it. Baffles go in, and the intake is matched to the exhaust at the ridge.
  • The owners' direct line on every documentIssues answered within 48 hours, most within 24. The owners' contact details are printed on every proposal and invoice.

FAQ

Soffit and fascia questions, answered straight

What New Jersey homeowners ask us before they sign.

Have a question not listed here? Call (201) 267-3000 or request an estimate.

01What are soffit and fascia?+

The fascia is the board at the edge of the roof that the gutters hang on; the soffit is the underside of the overhang between the fascia and the wall. Together they close the roof edge against water and animals and, if the soffit is vented, let the attic breathe.

02How do I know mine need repair?+

Peeling paint, soft or stained wood at the gutter line, sagging or missing soffit panels, animals getting into the attic, mould on the underside, ice dams every winter. A screwdriver pushed into the fascia tells us the rest.

03Can soffit and fascia help with attic ventilation?+

They are most of it. Vented soffit is the intake; the ridge vent is the exhaust. Without intake the attic overheats in summer, cooks the shingles, and in winter melts the snow into ice dams. We balance both when we replace the soffit.

04Which material should I choose?+

Vented aluminum soffit and wrapped or PVC fascia for most houses: no paint, no rot, matched to the gutters. Vinyl where the siding is vinyl and the colour has to match. Wood only where a historic profile has to stay, with the painting that comes with it.

05Are soffit and fascia included in a roof replacement?+

They can be, and that is the best time: the gutters are off and the edge is open. We inspect them on every roof job and quote the repair or replacement alongside, so the new roof drains into something sound.

06How often should trim be inspected?+

Once a year, before winter and after any big storm: paint, sealant and any wood that is still exposed. Wrapped and PVC trim needs a look, not a brush.

07Which brands do you install?+

Azek cellular PVC for fascia and trim and Mastic aluminum and vinyl soffit, fascia and trim components, chosen for resistance to warping, rot and insects and for the colour ranges that match our siding and gutters.

08Where do you work?+

Homes across Northern and Central New Jersey, including Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Passaic, Morris, Union, Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Sussex counties. Commercial and multifamily exteriors across the whole of New Jersey.
