Licenses, insurance and manufacturer certifications

Certified by the manufacturers whose warranties you get

A certification is not a badge for marketing. It is the manufacturer's permission to install its system, register its full warranty in your name, and be held to its standard. Ours cover every roof we sell, shingle, slate, flat and coated, and most of the exterior around it. Here is each one, and what it means for your building.

Four manufacturers, four top-tier programs

Each shingle maker certifies installers in tiers. The top tier is what lets a contractor register the manufacturer's best warranty, the one that covers workmanship as well as materials. We hold the top tier with all four.

GAF Certified Plus™ Contractor

What it is: GAF's screened contractor program: reliability, professionalism, verified customer satisfaction, factory training.

What you get: complete GAF Lifetime Roofing Systems and access to GAF's most comprehensive warranty packages, covering materials and workmanship, which only Certified Plus contractors can offer.

North America's largest roofing manufacturer

CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster™

What it is: CertainTeed's highest credential: five-plus years in business, full licensing and insurance, specialized exams on products, installation and warranty compliance, mastery of the Integrity Roof System.

What you get: the extended SureStart™ PLUS warranty. Fewer than 1% of roofers reach this level.

Top 1% nationwide

Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor

What it is: Owens Corning's highest standard, earned on thousands of installations, continuous hands-on training and a minimum of $1 million in liability insurance.

What you get: the Platinum Protection Roofing System Limited Warranty, Owens Corning's most comprehensive coverage, available only through Platinum Preferred contractors.

Less than 1% of roofing companies

TAMKO MasterCraft Pro™ Certified Contractor

What it is: TAMKO's highest level: credentials reviewed, ongoing training, priority access to materials and technical assistance.

What you get: extended TAMKO warranty coverage on Heritage® and Titan XT® shingle roofs, residential and commercial, that standard roofing companies cannot register.

Highest TAMKO tier

IKO & Atlas installed systems

What it is: Two more shingle lines we install to the manufacturer's specification when a client, an insurer or a budget calls for them.

What you get: the manufacturer's standard product warranty plus our own workmanship warranty, in writing.

Standard warranties, our workmanship on top

Slate, tile & copper craft, not a badge

What it is: There is no manufacturer program for a hundred-year-old slate roof. There is a track record: more than 200 churches and historic buildings, and approved-vendor status with the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey and the Archdiocese of Newark.

What you get: our workmanship warranty and a crew trained for the material.

Approved vendor, two dioceses

Why the tier matters

The difference between a product warranty and a system warranty

Any roofer can buy shingles and the shingles come with a product warranty. The warranties people actually want, the ones that cover the labor to fix a problem and are backed by the manufacturer rather than the contractor, exist only for complete systems installed by certified contractors, inspected and registered.

  1. 01
The whole system, one makerIce and water shield, synthetic underlayment, starter strips, shingles, hip and ridge caps and ventilation matched by the manufacturer, which is what the system warranty requires.
  2. 02
Installed to the published detailNail count and placement, exposure, valley method, flashing: the manufacturer's specification, not the crew's habit. Factory training is the point of the program.
  3. 03
Registered in your nameWe file the warranty with the manufacturer after the job; you receive the certificate. A warranty that was never registered is a brochure.
  4. 04
Transferable, in many casesSeveral manufacturer system warranties can transfer once to a new owner, which matters when you sell the house.

Why it matters to you

What a certification actually protects you from

Manufacturer programs exist because improper installation is the main reason roofs fail early, and a cheap coating job fails fastest of all. Certification changes four things on your job:

  • Factory training on the detailsSurface preparation, flashing details, application rates and thickness: the places where an uncertified crew guesses and a certified one follows the published spec.
  • Warranty eligibilityThe manufacturer's strongest coverage, materials and labor, only exists for installations by certified contractors. Everything else is the contractor's promise alone.
  • Technical support on your roofJob-start assistance, system validation and manufacturer inspections, so a second set of eyes checks the work before the warranty is issued.
  • Eligibility for specified projectsArchitects, engineers and property managers who require a certified installer can hire us for the scope; that requirement filters out most contractors.

And a share of every certified roof funds a roof for a family in need, through our One4One program.

FAQ

Certifications and licenses, answered straight

What homeowners, boards and facility managers ask before they sign.

Have a question not listed here? Call (201) 267-3000 or request an estimate.

01Are you licensed and insured?+

Yes. New Jersey home improvement contractor license #13VH13562200, general liability of at least $1 million, workers' compensation for every crew member, and additional coverage for commercial projects that run into the millions. Certificates are issued per property before work starts.

02What does "certified" actually mean?+

That the manufacturer has screened the company (licensing, insurance, track record), trained the crews on its systems, and authorized it to install those systems and register the manufacturer's warranty. Tiers differ: Certified Plus, Select ShingleMaster, Platinum Preferred, MasterCraft Pro and Master Contractor are each the top of their program.

03Does a certified installation cost more?+

Not for the certification itself. A system warranty has a registration fee set by the manufacturer, usually a small share of the job, and some programs discount it for certified contractors; Karnak's is 20% lower through us. What costs more is fixing an uncertified installation after the warranty is refused.

04Which certification applies to my roof?+

Shingle: GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning or TAMKO, by the shingle you choose. Flat membrane: Firestone Elevate, Johns Manville or GAF. Restoration coating: Henry, Karnak, GE Enduris, APOC or GAF CoatingsPro. Your proposal names the system, the certification and the warranty together.

05Who checks that the work meets the standard?+

Our own three layers of supervision first, with video quality checks every two to three hours. Then the manufacturer: several programs inspect installations and track warranty performance and customer satisfaction, and certification is withdrawn from contractors who fall short.

06Can a manufacturer warranty be voided?+

Yes, by an uncertified installation, by mixing components from different makers in a system warranty, or, on commercial roofs, by skipping the documented inspections most warranties require. We register the warranty, keep the records and offer the twice-yearly maintenance plan that keeps it valid.

07Does the warranty transfer if I sell?+

Many manufacturer system warranties allow one transfer to a new owner within a set period, often with a small fee and notice to the manufacturer. We tell you the rule for your system and help with the paperwork.
